There are two items a man may possess that can serve him well during his life, and provide many of his basic needs. These two items are a stick and a piece of cloth. This blog post is dedicated to the piece of cloth. (Not to cloth in general, but a piece of cloth)

Protection from the sun: A piece of cloth over your head protects you from the sun while ensuring you stay cool.

Protection from the cold: A piece of cloth wrapped around your neck is called a scarf and it serves to warm your neck, if it’s long enough you can wrap it around your head to warm your ears and head as well.

Soften your sleep: A piece of cloth can be folded into a soft pillow for you to rest your head on.

These are the three most common ways I use my piece of cloth. Now, I don’t want to turn this into an exercise of finding how many uses there are to a piece of cloth, not only because they will be endless, but also not to detract from what I am doing here, which is a simple declaration of gratefulness and recognition to the vital role a piece of cloth plays in the survival of human kind.

Feel free to share the three most common uses of your piece of cloth in the comments :-)

My most common use? Why, as my hijab of course :)

This is not my three most common uses but a tribute to a piece of cloth nevertheless. A fellow pilot, on an air-race in the Arizona desert, had survived a crash of his plane into the side of a mountain. The pilot in command, also a close friend, had died in the ensuing fire but Carl had managed to crawl out of the wreckage to a safe distance. His leg break was complete with the end of the broken bone between knee and ankle poking right out through the skin. Being able only to drag himself along on the ground, he managed to survive in the freezing desert mountains through two days and nights before being found by a rescue team.

He told me later in the hospital that what gave him the only physical comfort in that whole time was a piece of his shirt which he had saved and at night he placed this small piece of cloth over his shoulder (he was a large young man of 6’3″) when lying down to act as a blanket in the hope he could attempt to sleep. Amazingly enough, it worked very hard at its job of being a blanket to him and provided him considerable psychological comfort if only a modicum of physical comfort. But it meant enough to Carl for him to recall numerous times that this small piece of cloth was a most important aspect of his survival in the cold desert mountain nights.
